Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea has announced that she is ending her 2022 season due to a shoulder injury. Cirstea, 32, last played at the Tiriac Foundation Trophy in Bucharest, which took place between September 12-18.
Cirstea, who was clearly hampered by a shoulder injury in Bucharest, didn't make a deep run in front of her home fans as she suffered a surprise defeat to 114th-ranked Simona Waltert in the first round. Now, Cirstea took to social media to explain why she didn't appear in any tournaments in recent weeks.
"Since the US Open, I have been struggling with a shoulder injury. The recovery is taking longer than I expected and that is the reason I did not play any tournaments the last couple of weeks. I decided to put a stop to the 2022 season so I can recover, be 100% for next year and build a good team around me!
See you all on the court in 2023," Cirstea wrote in a message posted on her social media.

Cirstea made three semifinals this year
Cirstea, who is ranked at No.
39 in the world, finishes this season with a 22/21 record. Cirstea's season got off to a solid start as she made the Australian Open round-of-16, before losing to world No. 1 Iga Swiatek. After a good Australian Open result, Cirstea made three semifinals, on three different surfaces.
Cirstea made her first semifinal of the year in March, in Lyon. A month later, Cirstea made the Istanbul semifinal. Then, in her first grass tournament of the year, Cirstea reached the Birmingham semifinal. After Birmingham, Cirstea appeared in seven more tournaments, with no notable results.
Cirstea's form went downhill after Birmingham as Birmingham was the last tournament where she managed to win back-to-back matches. Cirstea's decision to end her season makes sense as she probably wouldn't be able to do much while injured.
