Three Czech Republican women reached the fourth round of the Miami Open on Sunday. These three were Petra Kvitova, Barbora Krejcikova and Marketa Vondrousova. Kvitova, seeded 15th, beat the 22nd-seeded Donna Vekic in their third-round match.
The two-time Wimbledon winner needed almost an hour and 40 minutes to post a 6-4, 7-6(3) win over the Croatian. The left-hander won 71% of her first-serve points to Vekic’s 68%. Neither player was able to save any break point she faced but Kvitova made good of three break point chances that came her way while she lost two break points during the proceedings.
The former world no. 2 hit 19 winners, five more than Vekic’s 14. Both players had 19 unforced errors each. In the round-of-16, Kvitova will play Varvara Gracheva. The qualifier won 6-1, 6-2 against Magdalena Frech in 70 minutes.
Krejcikova, the second-highest seeded Czech in the draw at no. 16, came through in her third-round match against 19th seed Madison Keys, 7-6(4), 6-3. The 2021 French Open champion needed an hour and 52 minutes to wrap up the win.

Krejcikova saved eight of the 10 break points she faced while converting three of five break points on the American’s serve. The world no. 13 finished the match with 86 points, seven more than Keys’ 79.
Next up for Krejcikova will be second seed Aryna Sabalenka. Sabalenka defeated Krejcikova’s compatriot, 31st seed Marie Bouzkova in their round-of-32 meeting. After merely 67 minutes of play, the world no. 2 clinched a 6-1, 6-2 victory for herself.
The Miami Open encounter between Krejcikova and Sabalenka will be the third time the two be facing each other, after the Dubai Open and Indian Wells. In Dubai Krejcikova beat Sabalenka in the quarter-finals while Sabalenka one-upped the Czech in the fourth-round two weeks ago.
Lastly, Vondrousova won the Czech derby against 17th seed Karolina Pliskova, 6-1, 6-2 in 52 minutes. The southpaw’s opponent will be Sorana Cirstea who took out Vondrousova’s fellow countrywoman, Karolina Muchova, 7-5, 6-1.
Meanwhile, Bianca Andreescu and Ekaterina Alexandrova will play in the fourth round of the Miami Open. The Canadian won 6-4, 6-4 against Sofia Kenin. The 18th-seeded Alexandrova ousted ninth seed Belinda Bencic, 7-6(8), 6-3. Photo Credit: Petra Kvitova Twitter
