2022 Miami champion Iga Swiatek congratulates Petra Kvitova

World No 1 Iga Swiatek congratulated Petra Kvitova on the Miami Open title. On Saturday, 33-year-old the Czech tennis player defeated Elena Rybakina 7-6 (14) 6-2 to win her first title of the year and become the oldest woman to win Miami since Serena Williams in 2015.

Rybakina entered the final as the favorite ready to claim the sunshine double but Kvitova used all of her experience to upset the 23-year-old Kazakh. Kvitova saved a total of five set points in the first-set tie-break and that later turned out to be the key in her win.

"Congratulations! Amazing and inspiring performance! You deserve it!," Swiatek tweeted at Kvitova.

Last year, Swiatek won the Miami title.

This year, Swiatek came to Miami but then withdrew late from the tournament due to a rib injury. In the absence of Swiatek, Kvitova won Miami. After winning Miami, Kvitova admitted it was good to know she was still able to compete against the best on the biggest level.

"I have no idea what this will do in the season. I'm just happy that I won it from nothing, I would say. I think I'm playing pretty good tennis starting the year, but, you know, didn't go really deep in the tournament. Finally I have it.

I think I just take it very positively that I can still compete with the best. The clay is waiting and then it's grass. The tennis world is just very fast, and I can't really stand there and be watching this trophy all the time.

I have to move forward, of course, as everybody would. It means a lot for me that even in my age I can still win a big tournament. That's the biggest thing," Kvitova said after winning Miami. When it comes to Swiatek, she has resumed training and the Pole is expected to return to action in Stuttgart, which starts on April 17th.
