Jessica Pegula happy with the win, but: "My opponent had a crazy schedule"

Jessica Pegula closed the tournament in the best way and she conquered the title of champion in the WTA 1000 in Montreal. The American returns number 3 in the world after a tournament where she beat number one in the semifinals and she defeated Liudmila Samsonova in the final.

Here are some statements from the new Canadian Open champion, in the post-final press conference: "I know that physically she wasn't at her best, but I played and I think I had an excellent game. Indeed, I made few mistakes and I can say: I played the perfect match.

I was playing loosely on my serve and more aggressively on my return, I got it all right and I can only say, it's a beautiful day."

Jessica Pegula: "My opponent had a crazy schedule"

Jessica made it clear on the court that she would have liked to win another way and in the conference she explained: "My opponent had a crazy schedule, and she too played a few hours before the final.

She's not ideal even if not much could be done, unfortunately it's just a matter of weather and scheduling didn't help, she didn't go in her favor. It's difficult when you're in this condition, she's a great player and I'm sure we'll find her fighting again." Then, Pegula talked about her results and her great continuity, with this year she returned to number three in the world: "It's a great feeling to get these results, I've been very regular with finals, semifinals and some quarterfinals.

I worked a lot and beating players like Gauff or Iga Swiatek in consecutive matches is not easy. It's true that I've never had many points to defend and therefore I didn't have a lot of pressure, but I'm fine. Sometimes tennis can be hard on you, we play every week to win and unfortunately you often lose.

We play many matches without winning tournaments but this week makes you realize that it was worth it. Now I can't wait to leave again and will go to Cincinnati immediately. Here the fast courts and the crowd helped me and now I want to continue like this."
