World No. 8 Karolina Muchova has shared devastating news ahead of the start of the 2024 season as the Czech tennis star is withdrawing from the Australian Open due to her ongoing wrist injury.

Muchova, 27, dealt with a wrist injury in late 2023 and she didn't play any tournaments after the US Open. In late October, Muchova announced she decided to skip the WTA Finals and focus on being healthy and ready for the start of 2024.

Unfortunately, skipping the last part of 2023 didn't help Muchova as she is still not ready to play. After being forced to delay her WTA Finals debut, Muchova is also forced to miss the opening Grand Slam of the new season. In her statement, Muchova admitted she is feeling certain frustration but vowed to keep doing everything she can to recover as soon as possible.

"Hi fans & friends. This isn’t my favourite thing to share especially at the start of a new season, but unfortunately the pain in a wrist came back in the middle of my tennis preparation. I therefore have to postpone the start of the season and fully heal my wrist first. It’s frustrating but I have to keep positive, recover and get ready for the rest of the year. See you in 2025 @australianopen," Muchova announced on Instagram.

Muchova's results at the Australian Open

So far, Muchova has made four Australian Open appearances. In 2019, Muchova made her Australian Open debut after winning three qualifying matches to reach the main draw. After winning three qualifying matches, Muchova lost to fellow Czech Karolina Pliskova in the first round.

After clinching her first Australian Open win in 2020 and reaching the second round, Muchova made a really deep run at Melbourne Park in 2021 as she made the semifinal before losing to Jennifer Brady. Muchova didn't play at the Australian Open in 2022 but she returned to Melbourne Park in 2023. Last season, Muchova's Australian Open run ended in the second round with a loss to Danielle Collins.
