Chinese tennis star Qinwen Zheng reveals she has never spoken with Peng Shuai and noted her primary focus is on her own tennis career. Last week, the WTA announced tournaments will return to China in the fall. After Peng accused a former Chinese vice premier of sexual harassment, the former Grand Slam champion disappeared for some time before reappearing in early 2022.
The WTA demanded a fully transparent investigation into the Peng claims and also suspended all tennis operations in China. "Actually, I don't know how she is. I have never talked to her in my life. I'm just a beginner in WTA still.
I just trying to focus on my tennis and enjoy playing in front of my people," 20-year-old Zheng said. Even though Zheng hasn't had any contact with Peng, she thinks the former Chinese tennis player is living safely back home.
"No, in the tour I don't talk much. I basically just stay close by with my team. But I think she's pretty well in China. Just have a normal life. But honestly I don't know how she is. I just focus more on myself, yeah," Zheng added.
Zheng excited about finally playing WTA tournaments in China
For 16 months, all tennis operations in China were suspended by the WTA. But this year, China will resume hosting WTA events. Zheng, ranked at No 25 in the world, is extremely excited about finally getting a chance to compete in front of her family and friends.
“I’m so happy the tournaments in China will finally be back because I’m really excited to play in front of my people. I really miss China because it has been a long time, I never have time to come back there.
Since the tournaments have started, I will have more time to go back to my home town (in Hubei) and meet all my family and to show my tennis over there," Zheng said.
