Naomi Osaka's ex-coach Wim Fissette is now working with rising Chinese star Qinwen Zheng, according to Filip Dewulf. Fissette, who is one of the most respected coaches on the WTA Tour, has worked with several Grand Slam champions over the course of his coaching career.
Before splitting with Osaka, Fissette also worked with the likes of Angelique Kerber, Victoria Azarenka, Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova, Johanna Konta, Kim Clijsters, etc. Fissette, who has a history of guiding his players to Grand Slam wins, will now try to help 20-year-old Zheng elevate her game to a new level and become a Grand Slam.
Zheng, ranked at No 24 in the world, is one of the most talented girls on the WTA Tour and many believe the Chinese has a bright future ahead of her. During last year's French Open, Zheng drew attention to herself when she stunned Halep and she was also the only player who managed to win a set against Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros.
Fissette starts working with Zheng after splitting with Osaka
Fissette and Osaka, who started working at the start of the 2020 season, enjoyed success together. At the 2020 US Open, Osaka lifted her third Grand Slam title.
A few months later, Osaka won her fourth Grand Slam title at the 2021 Australian Open. Last July, Osaka and Fissette decided to end their partnership. In his Instagram message, Fissette expressed gratitude to Osaka for giving him a chance to work with her.
"It has been a privilege to coach Naomi since 2019 and see her grow into the champion she has become. She has inspired a whole new generation to fall in love with the game & to speak up for what they believe in. It’s been incredible to play a part in that journey. Thank you. I wish you all the best and looking forward to my next chapter," Fissette announced in July.
