Jessica Pegula has suffered an unfortunate setback ahead of the Australian Open as the American has been forced to withdraw from her Adelaide International semifinal match due to a Gastrointestinal Illness (GI), the tournament announced.
Pegula, seeded at No. 2, was scheduled to take on world No. 15 Daria Kasatkina in the Adelaide semifinal on Friday. Unfortunately, that match didn't happen due to the American experiencing a GI illness.
GI illnesses are any ailments linked to the digestive system, including the throat, stomach, and intestines. Also, diagnoses may include acute, short-term illnesses, which some refer to as stomach bugs.
Following Pegula's Adelaide withdrawal, Kasatkina got a free pass into the Adelaide final. After the Pegula news, Kasatkina took to X to wish her colleague a quick recovery ahead of the Australian Open.
Wishing Jess a speedy recovery and be 100% ready for AO🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 https://t.co/XVmH48fC86

Pegula suffers an unfortunate setback ahead of the Australian Open
For world No. 5 Pegula, suffering from a GI issue just two days before the start of the Australian Open is certainly not the best thing that could have happened to her. Unfortunately, this is not the first time that Pegula sustained a setback just before the start of a Grand Slam.
After arriving in Paris for the 2023 French Open, Pegula got food poisoning on her first dinner. For the next couple of days, Pegula was unable to fully practice and properly prepare for the French Open.
Still, Pegula managed to compete at the French Open. However, it was evident that Pegula was far from her best in Paris as her run ended in the third round with a 1-6 3-6 loss to Elise Mertens.
Now, Pegula is again battling an issue just before the start of a Grand Slam.
On Thursday, Pegula learned that she would face qualifier world No. 182 Rebecca Marino in the Australian Open first round. It remains to be seen if the GI illness sustained in Adelaide will impact Pegula at the Australian Open and how much.
