Spanish tennis player Pedro Martinez was amazed by the comeback fellow compatriot Rafael Nadal pulled off in the Australian Open final. Nadal was on the brink of losing the final in straight sets to Daniil Medvedev but he recovered to win 2-6 6-7 (5) 6-4 6-4 7-5.
It was one of the greatest comebacks Nadal has ever pulled off. “After many times one is left speechless and what to say about Nadal. it is a pride to have him in Spain and everyone can learn from him," Martinez told the ATP Tour en Espanol website.
Nadal created a historic comeback
Medvedev was up by two sets and had a 3-2 lead in the third set. Nadal was on the verge of getting broken in the sixth but he saved three consecutive set points to level the set at three games apiece.
After the match, Nadal admitted the sixth game of the third set was the key. “In that moment, of course, the situation was critical,” said Nadal, “but sport is unpredictable. The normal thing is to lose the match in straight sets from that situation.
On the other hand, I had a big chance in the second [set] too. “I was repeating to myself during the whole match, I lost a lot of times here [in Melbourne] having chances, sometimes I was a little bit unlucky. I just wanted to keep believing until the end.
I just wanted to give myself a chance. “That's what I did. Just fight, just keep belief in trying to find a solution. Of course, I was lucky to save that moment. [There were] a lot of moments that can decide the final like this”.
Nadal now owns a record 21 Grand Slams. Nadal has made a stunning start to the year as he hasn't lost a match yet. Nadal won back-to-back titles at the Melbourne Summer Set and the Australian Open. Nadal will be aiming to win a 22nd Grand Slam title at the French Open.
