Dominic Thiem identifies why Wimbledon is his 'worst Grand Slam' by a distance

Dominic Thiem says Wimbledon is his "worst Grand Slam by a distance" as he admits playing on the grass has always been very tricky and challenging for his game style. Thiem, 29, has been a finalist in each Grand Slam tournament outside Wimbledon.

At Wimbledon, Thiem has made seven main draw appearances. Thiem's best Wimbledon result came in 2017, when he made the round-of-16 before losing to Tomas Berdych. Since then, Thiem hasn't won a match at Wimbledon as he suffered first-round defeats in 2018 and 2019.

“For me, in terms of results, Wimbledon is my worst Grand Slam by a distance. The last match I won there was six years ago - so a long time," Thiem told The Power of Sport, via Eurosport.

Thiem on why he struggles at Wimbledon

“Grass is just different.

The bounce of the ball is much lower. Serve is much more important. Often a few points can make the difference. You’ll probably also get a lot more breaks on grass, so it’s a lot more difficult but at the same time, it’s a lot of fun.

Unfortunately, it’s a very brief season but it’s about getting the most out of it," Thiem said. In 2021, Thiem missed Wimbledon because he suffered a wrist injury the week before the start of the tournament. Last year, Thiem just returned to tennis and he decided against playing any grass tournaments.

But this year, Thiem is again playing on the grass. In this year's Wimbledon first-round, Thiem will be playing against Stefanos Tsitsipas. It's a very difficult matchup for Thiem but the Austrian hopes he can do well at The Championships.

“I think everybody knows Wimbledon. Not just sports fans or tennis fans. It’s the tournament with the greatest tradition and it’s the dream of every player and of every fan to be there and to watch games," Thiem said.
