The Austrian ended his terrible streak at Majors, experiencing seven straight losses before shining against the Kazakh on Grandstand. Dominic tamed his strokes nicely, hitting 26 winners and 21 unforced errors. Alexander played another match without any focus, serving under 50% and hitting 17 double faults!

Thiem seized six out of ten break points and lost serve two times to control the scoreboard and move into the second round. Dominic made three good holds at the start of the duel and created a break chance in the fourth game.

Alexander denied it with a forehand down the line attack and stayed on the positive side.

Dominic Thiem ousted Alexander Bublik in straight sets at the US Open.

The Kazakh played a terrible drop shot in the sixth game and lost serve to find himself 4-2 behind.

Bublik pulled the break back a few minutes later after Thiem's wild forehand, reducing the deficit and making himself competitive. Dominic stayed focused after the rival's underarm serve in the eighth game, delivering his second straight break and serving for the set at 5-3.

Alexander passed Dominic at the net and created a break chance. Thiem saved it with a fine attack and seized the first set point to clinch the opener 6-3. The Austrian placed a backhand down the line return winner in the second set's third game to grab a break and move in front.

The former champion erased a break point in the fourth game and held to forge a 3-1 advantage. Bublik lost serve again in the fifth game, falling further behind and losing interest. Thiem served for the set at 5-2 and held at 30 to open a 6-3, 6-2 lead in an hour and 13 minutes.

At the start of the third set, Alexander hit a double fault to lose serve and move closer to the exit door. Dominic delivered three comfortable holds and moved 4-2 ahead in no time. Bublik played another terrible service game, falling 5-2 behind and allowing Thiem to serve for the victory.

The Austrian netted a routine forehand to drop serve and keep his rival in contention. Dominic had another chance to seal the deal at 5-4, and there were no mistakes this time. Thiem held at 15 with a forehand crosscourt winner, securing his first Major win in over two and a half years.
