World No. 1 Novak Djokovic was happy with the way he performed against top-ranked Chilean tennis player Cristian Garin in the Wimbledon round-of-16. Djokovic, seeded at No. 1, handed Garin a 6-2 6-4 6-2 loss to progress into the Wimbledon quarterfinal.
“I am happy, particularly with the match today. After the third round [against Denis Kudla], it was kind of up and down for me," Djokovic said. "Today was a very solid performance from the first to last point. I was mentally present.
I was serving much better, using the court well. “Cristian played for his first time on Centre Court. You could see he was nervous, making a lot of unforced errors at the beginning of the match, which gave me an opportunity to win [the] first set comfortably”.
Djokovic achieves a milestone
This win voer Garin put Djokovic at third place on the all-time list for most Wimbledon men’s singles quarter-final appearances. “You always enjoy obviously hearing those stats,” Djokovic said.
“It's a privilege to break records in the sport that I truly love. I'm devoted to this sport as much as I think anybody out there on the tour. I just try to do my best. “Of course, [records] are a motivating factor.
I am aware that there are many records on the line. I'm not aware of all of them. They do inspire me to play my best tennis”. Djokovic didn't suffer a single break against Garin during their match. “I served well and [felt] comfortable.
That's probably affecting the game in general,” Djokovic assessed. “When I'm able to serve well, get a lot of free points on my first serve, when I go quickly through my service games, it just gives me more confidence and allows me to relax a bit more on the return games and from the back of the court”.
