Cristian Garin opens on dark times after surviving thriller versus Jack Sock

World No. 29 Cristian Garin admitted the first round victory in Houston means a lot to him as he is hoping to put the dark times behind him and start making good results again. On Tuesday, Garin survived a Houston first round thriller as she edged out American Jack Sock 4-6 6-3 7-5.

It was Garin's first win since the Australian Open. Garin arrived to Houston on a five-match losing streak and desperate to clinch his first victory since January. After beating Sock, Garin admitted the dark period he recently went through.

“Honestly, I had a few months where I didn't feel good playing tennis at all. It's very nice to win again, because off the court I also had problems. Houston is a good place for me, I will try to move forward," Garin said after the match, per We Love Tennis.

Garin opened up after a Santiago loss

After losing to Sebastian Baez in the Santiago first round in late February, Garin indicated he was contemplating to end his career or at least take a break. “Right now it's horrible for me to play tennis.

I've tried so hard and it doesn't work. This Friday, I will make a decision about my future. I'll see what I'm going to do, because it's not worth continuing to play like this. I give 100% and try hard. Even though people think I don't, I love tennis and I love it.

Sometimes there are bad times and you have to keep going. The only thing I want is to play without worrying about the shoulder, I go through a lot of ups and downs. I still feel a little pain," Garin said in late February. Garin took a month off after Santiago and returned to action in Miami, where he suffered a first round defeat to Pedro Martinez. Garin plays Jordan Thompson next in Houston.
