No.6 University of Virginia men's tennis team reached the quarterfinals of the 2024 ITA National Team Indoor Championship with a win over Duke University at Columbia's Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center in New York. Virginia will face today, Saturday 17 February 2024, the University of Tennessee, which eliminated USC.

Virginia defeated Duke

The Cavaliers won the doubles point and earned singles victories, with senior Jeffrey von der Schulenburg winning the deciding point.
Virginia opened the match with a dominant performance on the doubles court, winning 6-3 on both courts one and three, with court two serving with a 5-3 advantage when play was stopped.

Duke took four of six first sets in singles, but senior Chris Rodesch and freshman Dylan Dietrich closed out set victories on courts one and two to put UVA up 3-0. Duke won in straight sets on court six to take a 3-1 lead, but seniors Iñaki Montes and von der Schulenburg both won the second set on courts three and four to force a third set. Von der Schulenburg closed out the third set with a 6-3 win against Connor Krug to secure the victory.

The Cavaliers have won six ITA Indoor National Team Championships, including four consecutive from 2008 to 2011 and most recently in 2017, when the tournament was held in Charlottesville. Only Stanford and UCLA have won more indoor team titles.

Tennessee defeated USC

The No. 7 University of Tennessee men's tennis team defeated No. 5 USC 4-0 in the first round of the ITA National Indoor Team Championships at the Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.

Tennessee won the point with Johannus Monday and Angel Diaz over USC's Peter Makk and Lodewijk Weststrate, winning 87% of their first serve points. Filip Apltauer and Younes Lalami helped secure the doubles point in a 6-4 win over the Trojans' Volodymyr Iakubenko and Samuel Rubell. Shunsuke Mitsui and Filip Pieczonka, led 5-4 before the match ended.

Mitsui fought back to win the first set 6-4 over Lodewijk Weststrate before winning 6-1 in the second set to give the Vols a 3-0 lead. Diaz scored the decisive point with a 6-4, 6-2 result over Samuel Rubell, recording his second victory of the 2024 doubles season. Mitsui reached 75 career singles victories, 18 against ranked opponents. The junior also eclipsed his 50th doubles victory in singles.

Vols will then face Virginia in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships in a few minutes at the Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.
