Alex de Minaur reacts to edging out Marton Fucsovics in Davis Cup thriller

World No. 34 Alex de Minaur told himself he would leave it all out on the court against Marton Fucsovics and he did so keep Australia alive against Hungary. John Millman suffered a shock loss to Zsombor Piros in the opening rubber of the tie and de Minaur had to save the Australian team.

De Minaur, a former world No. 15, edged out top-ranked Hungarian tennis player Fucsovics 7-5 2-6 7-6 (2) after just more than three hours of play to force a deciding rubber against Hungary. De Minaur blew a match point in the 12th game of the third set and failed to serve out for the match but dominated the tie-break to edge out Fucsovics.

“This is what Davis Cup matches are all about,” de Minaur said, per the Davis Cup website. “You leave it all out there for your country, and you’ve got to be proud of your effort. I was going to leave it all out there whether I won or not.

It was a brutal battle, a great match, a great level by Marton”.

Lleyton Hewitt made a good prediction about de Minaur

“Hungary get the opportunity to play in the Davis Cup Finals for the first time. They are really led by their No.1 player Martin Fucsovics who’s very talented and an incredible athlete.

He plays well on these surfaces, so we have to be very wary of him,” Hewitt said before the start of the Davis Cup Finals. “Alex (De Minaur) is going to get the chance to take on some incredible players in the No.1 slot." Hewitt made it clear before the start of the event what level of tennis he expects from de Minaur at the Davis Cup Finals.

"He’s had a really consistent three or four years and has established himself as a top player out there,” Hewitt said. “He plays well on the hard court surface and potentially played some of his best tennis two years ago in the Davis Cup Finals."
