Alex de Minaur: There's always extra nerves when you play for your country

Rising Australian star Alex de Minaur underlined that there is additional pressure and expectation when you play for your country after beating Daniel Elahi Galan Riveros of Colombia at the inaugural Davis Cup Finals. World No.

18 de Minaur didn't fail to deliver against Galan Riveros as he saw off the 194th-ranked Galan Riveros 6-4 6-3 to clinch the first victory for his side in Madrid. In the opening rubber of the tie, Nick Kyrgios handed a straight-set defeat to Alejandro Gonzalez.

De Minaur saved two break points in the sixth game of the first set, before he converted his fifth break in the following game to claim the lone break of the first set. The Australian didn't realize a match point in the seventh game of the second set and failed to serve out for the match in the eighth game but broke Galan Riveros for the fourth time in the match in the ninth game to seal the win.

"I’m very happy with how the team has been able to perform today,” de Minaur said, per the Davis Cup Finals website. “It’s never easy playing for your country, your first tie, there’s always a lot of extra nerves you probably wouldn’t normally have when you’re playing for yourself because you’re playing for your whole team-mates, for your whole country.

I’m very happy that Nick and I could come out and get some wins and now let’s see how the doubles goes. “I think we’ve got a strong team and we’ve got a lot of options”.
