The French tennis player Gael Monfils matched a sensational figure that belonged to two legends such as Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

The first indoor hard court tournaments are being held this week: the ATP 250 in Antwerp (Belgium) and the ATP 250 in Stockholm (Sweden), which will push the tour towards the final rush with the ATP Masters 1000 in Paris Bercy, the finals Davis Cup in Malaga and the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, a tournament in which the 8 best tennis players of the season will compete.

As for the Swedish tournament, one of the finalists is the thirty-seven year old Frenchman Gael Monfils. Gael, after the victory against countryman Adrian Mannarino with a score of 7-5 7-6 (3), became the oldest tennis player to reach the semi-final in Stockholm and also reached the semi-final number 70 of his career.

Monfils and the incredible data

With the semi-final reached in which he faced and beat the Serbian Laslo Djere, Monfils is the fourth active tennis player to reach this milestone, behind the Serbian and 24-time Slam champion Novak Djokovic with 183 semi-finals (136 won and 47 lost), de the Spanish tennis player and 22-time Slam champion Rafael Nadal with 177 semi-finals (130 wins and 47 defeats) and the Scottish champion and 3-time Slam winner Andy Murray who boasts 102 semi-finals (71 wins and 31 defeats).

Monfils has reached the thirty-fourth final of his career. The Parisian tennis player's last final dates back to the ATP 250 tournament in Adelaide in which he won against the Russian Aslan Karatsev. Monfils, in fact, in the ATP Masters 1000 of Canada, during the second set against the British Jack Draper, injured his Achilles tendon, returning to the circuit only in March, in the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells.

Not being able to compete didn't help the Frenchman who only found his form and his athletic and spectacular tennis again in the ATP Masters 1000 in August.

We recall Monfils has said several times how he could be close to retiring from playing tennis, and it is not certain that the French tennis player may decide to retire at the end of the 2024 season, the year in which there will also be the Olympics in Paris.
