In an interview with Stuff.co.nz. French tennis player Gael Monfils shared his strong feelings towards tennis. After the physical problem that hit him at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown, overcome by the Frenchman, Monfils still has no intention of stopping.
"The reality is that I love this sport. It's something I can't deny, it's just incredible to be on the pitch. I've had a couple of difficult conversations with my agent Nicolas Lamperin and my wife Elina Svitolina, but I'm happy with everything I have Done.
I'm happy in my life, I don't need anything else. I just want to enjoy tennis and I guess Nicolas and Elina used good words to push me to continue. Inside me the truth is that I don't want to stop, but obviously it is more difficult to travel and make sacrifices.
I still have that little fire and that helps me move forward. When I play I'm pretty good, but I'm not going to lie: it's harder to recover. I have to do a different rehab. I have to work differently with my fitness, but I try to make my 37 years just a number," explained the Frenchman.
The injury at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown
The bad fall suffered during his participation in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown exhibition event seems not to have had serious consequences on Gael Monfils. The French tennis player should start his 2024 at the ATP 250 tournament in Auckland, scheduled from 8 to 13 January, as agreed with his team at the end of the year.
The 37-year-old had to miss the first part of the season in 2023 due to a complicated Achilles tendon injury. An injury that still forced him to play many matches in precarious conditions. Monfils hopes to be able to find continuity to express his real level both from a physical and technical point of view.
