ATP Santiago: Cristian Garin and Roberto Carballes Baena reach quarters

World no. 22 Cristian Garin scored his first ATP win of the season at home in Santiago, beating the fellow Chilean Alejandro Tabilo 6-2, 6-2 in 68 minutes. The top seed lost 15 points in eight service games and fended off two break chances to mount the pressure on the other side of the court.

A qualifier couldn't follow that pace, dropping half of the points behind the initial shot and getting broken twice in each set to propel Garin over the top. Cristian held at love in game two after an ace and grabbed a break in the next one to forge the advantage.

After two deuces, the top seed closed the sixth game and secured a break at love when Tabilo netted a backhand to move 5-2 up. Serving for the set, Cristian fired a service winner in game eight to close the encounter's first part in style, hoping for more in set number two.

Alejandro sprayed a backhand error in the second set's first game to fall behind, with Garin producing three comfortable holds to open a 4-2 gap. Garin earned another break a few minutes later and saved two break points in game eight before converting the second match point to sail into the last eight.

Cristian Garin scored his first victory of the season after a slow start.

Roberto Carballes Baena ousted the Cordoba champion Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-2, 6-0 in an hour and 23 minutes for his first ATP quarter-final since Gstaad 2019.

The Spaniard defended all eight break chances and secured five breaks that carried him over the top. Roberto broke at love in game two and saved four break opportunities in the next one to move 3-0 ahead after 20 minutes. Serving at 4-2, Carballes Baena defended a break point and forced Cerundolo's mistake to increase the lead, closing the set with a break in game eight for 6-2.

It was all about Roberto in set number two, as he clinched three breaks and sealed the deal with a backhand winner at 5-0 that sent him through. Daniel Elahi Galan ousted the 3rd seed Pablo Andujar 6-1, 7-6 in an hour and 33 minutes.

The Colombian had the upper hand in the opener thanks to a double break and fended off a set point in the second set's tie break to win it 9-7 and advance into the first ATP quarter-final since Houston 2019.
