World No. 173 Tomas Machac couldn't hide his happiness after clinching his second big win at the Davis Cup Finals. On Sunday, Czech Machac stunned world No. 25 Dan Evans 6-2 7-5. “I enjoyed every second on the court and I am very happy that I had a chance to play against such a good player at such a good event,” a delighted Machac said, per the Davis Cup Finals website.
“I am happy to have turned the second set around. I played really well in the opening set and I had to change my tactics in the second because Evans was more aggressive”.
Evans insisted he knew Machac would play well
"It’s a bit difficult to take," admitted Evans.
"I knew he was going to play well today because he had a good win the other day. He outplayed me in the first set and in the second I had my chances”. A few days earlier, Machac stunned former world No. 7 Richard Gasquet in his first-ever Davis Cup match.
"“I am super happy that I won my first ever Davis Cup match,” said Machac after beating Gasquet. “I am super happy that I could even play this match, to be honest. It was also great to play against Richard Gasquet, somebody who I watched so many times on television.
“I decided that I just wanted to enjoy all the matches I played at the Finals, I felt this was key. I was certain about this from the beginning, but for the opening part of the first set I was a little nervous. “But I fought for every point in the match, and that was important.
That is what my captain on the bench and my teammates were saying to me throughout, and I was really happy that I could get the win for Czech Republic”.
