Fabian Marozsan's victory over Carlos Alcaraz represented the most unexpected surprise of the tournament, but probably also of this first half of the season. The Spaniard was considered on a par with Novak Djokovic, the big favorite of this tournament, having lined up Barcelona and Madrid.
His path up to the semifinals of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia seemed obvious, but he hadn't reckoned with the Hungarian, who had previously got the better, with great difficulty, first over Corentin Moutet, then over Jiri Lehecka.
A totally unpredictable success, which gave birth to a truly surprising fact. According to the bookmakers' odds, in fact, since 2009, yesterday victory of number 135 in the ranking has been the one with the highest odds in the world, 23 times the stake.
Impressive numbers that testify to the sporting feat achieved by Marozsan, on which no one would have bet a penny. In fact, the passage of the Alcaraz round was paid only 1.01, the minimum amount available.
The most surprising hits of the last 14 years
Other great successes, in addition to today's one, have shocked the betting world.
Going back in time we see Novak Djokovic's 2017 debacle against Denis Istomin, who eliminated the then six-time champion from the Australian slam. Always the Serbian protagonist, a year earlier, he was ousted from Wimbledon, at the hands of Sam Querrey.
That, too, made a lot of noise. The same year, always Nole left the scene from Monte-Carlo, defeated by the Czech Jiri Vesely, on a day of grace. Between 2012 and 2013 at Wimbledon he witnessed three great feats, absolutely unexpected.
One of these starring, despite him, Roger Federer, who surprisingly had to leave the tournament prematurely due to the great performance of Sergiy Stakhovsky, who played the match of his life. In the same year Steve Darcis got the better of Rafael Nadal.
The greatest feat, probably also the most remembered, as it was one of the very few defeats suffered at the Roland Garros, that of the 2022 times slam champion against Robin Soderling, who paved the way for Federer's first success in Paris.
