Gael Monfils suffered a bad injury during the Ultimate Tennis Showdown exhibition match, getting a sprained ankle, which will most likely need to be monitored in the next few days, to understand the extent of the injury. The Frenchman abandoned the match he was playing against the British Jack Draper.

It is not excluded at this moment that the Parisian player will be forced to remain out of action to fully recover from the physical problem. The number 74 in the ATP world ranking was very motivated and had every intention of carrying out a very good physical and athletic preparation in the month of December, to be ready for the first official commitments of the new season.

And to think that Monfils had glorious resolutions for this December

After the many recent problems, another inconvenience could completely change Monfils' plans for the start of the 2024 vintage.

The competition being held in London could thus lose one of the eight protagonists: present at this event were Draper, Alexander Bublik and Holger Rune, who together with Gael make up group B, while Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud, Diego Schwartzman and Benoit Paire have been included in group A.

In a recent interview with The Independent, the Frenchman said: "I've been super lucky in my career. It would be difficult to say I have regrets, but maybe I could have enjoyed it even more. It's just crazy, to be honest, to keep playing.

I have nothing to prove. I always say that Paris is magical and, of course, it's a special place. If I manage to qualify for the Olympics it would be fantastic, otherwise we'll see what happens." Monfils has won 12 titles out of 34 finals played, three of which he lost in ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, and has also played in two Slam semi-finals.

The most important titles of her career so far are the three ATP 500s won in Washington in 2016 and in Rotterdam, in 2019 and 2020.
