Italian tennis star Lorenzo Sonego was happy with his performance in the Eastbourne semifinal. Sonego, ranked at No. 27 in the world, overcame lucky loser Max Purcell 6-1 3-6 6-3 to reach his second ATP final of the season.
“I am really happy because this is my second final on grass and I like the conditions here because I can go to the net,” Sonego said. “I am serving well, I am more offensive, and I want to do the same tomorrow.
“With only three tournaments on grass, it is not easy to adapt. But my tennis is good for this surface because I serve well and if I return better, I can have a great tournament each week”.
Sonego delivered two great sets
Sonego made a perfect start to the match, having won the opening three games of the match.
Purcell served out the fourth game to get on the board but it didn't change the outcome of the first set as Sonego claimed his second break in the sixth game to take a commanding 5-1 lead. In the seventh game, Sonego realized his first set point to take the opener.
After easily losing the first set, Purcell regrouped and started playing much better tennis. In the sixth game of the second set, Purcell earned his first break of the match to take a 4-2 lead. Three games later, Purcell served out to love to win the second set and force a decider.
After dropping the second set, Sonego quickly regrouped as he broke Purcell in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. Purcell served out the fourth game to end Sonego's three-game winning run but he dropped his serve once again in the sixth game.
Sonego then realized his second match point in the seventh game to book a three-set win. In the second semifinal of the day, Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur beat Sonwoo Kwon 6-3 7-6 (2). It remains to be seen if Sonego can claim his second ATP title of the season ahead of Wimbledon.
