Marcos Giron, 28, admitted he had no answer for Rafael Nadal's game when he clashed the Spaniard for the first time at this past Australian Open. Nadal, who clinched a record 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, kicked off his campaign at Melbourne Park with a 6-1 6-4 6-2 win over Giron.
“I think it's taken for granted how disciplined he is, his shots are just phenomenal. When you play against him, it's not just the power and speed he plays with, but also the decisions he makes, so it's hard to beat him.
It was very difficult to get into his service games. The kicks from him are not too powerful, but what he is able to do with his decisions is impressive," Giron said, per Punto de Break.
Giron praises Nadal, the Big 3
“I think Rafa, Novak and Fed are incredible, almost impossible for anyone to beat.
But a change is taking place. Novak won three Slams last year, but we are 12 Americans in the top 100. We are excited and hungry, at the gates. At the Grand Slams, we are working hard. It's possible, anything can happen," Giron added.
Giron put up a great run at this week's inaugural Dallas Open to make the semifinal. "When you start winning, you gain confidence that your game can materialize. There are some things in the game that I still have to work on.
There are little nuances of the game that I had to improve on. I feel like I did a good job on that. By winning matches I was able to gain confidence every week. When you play well, you want to win a lot of matches and keep the momentum going, but you start to feel tired. I'm learning to find the balance on how many tournaments I can play," Giron explained.
