Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas executed his game plan perfectly and claimed a straight-set win over Marcos Giron to progress into the Acapulco semifinal. Tsitsipas, seeded at Np. 3, handed a 6-3 6-4 loss to Giron in the Acapulco quarterfinal.
Tsitsipas will be fighting Cameron Norrie for a place in the Acapulco final. "I was trying to open the court, trying to come in on the short balls," Tsitsipas said after the match, per the ATP website. "It was very good overall.
I was able to come to the net and close a few at the net. It did help me a lot to to generate even more confidence, game after game. It paid off pretty well."
Tsitsipas claimed a routine win over Giron
Tsitsipas made a good start to the match as he earned the opening break of the match in the fourth game.
Tsitsipas faced four break points in the seventh game but saved them all to take a 5-2 lead. After saving four break points in the seventh game, Tsitsipas routinely served out for the first set in the ninth game. Tsitsipas then made a strong start to the second set as he broke Giron in the opening game of the set.
Tsitsipas then held on to his serve the rest of the set to book a straight-set win. Tsitsipas faces next Norrie, who defeated Peter Gojowczyk 6-1 6-0. "I used the court to my advantage," Norrie said. "Very slow, very bouncy conditions.
I just made it physical points and made him play one more ball. "Even though the score was easy, it was definitely not easy. I sweat through like five shirts, and it was definitely a very physical match. I really enjoyed it." Norrie defeated Tsitsipas at the Hopman Cup in 2019, but the Greek got his revenge over the Briton in Lyon last year. Tsitsipas fell just short of winning Acapulco last year as he ended runner-up in the final to Alexander Zverev.
