Carlos Alcaraz has made it perfectly clear that he must "improve many things" in his game if he wants to have a shot at winning the ATP Finals. After a first-round bye, No 2 seed Alcaraz kicked off his Paris Masters campaign on Tuesday.
Shockingly, Alcaraz's Paris campaign was very short-lived as 45th-ranked Roman Safiullin upset the Spaniard 6-3 6-4. Prior to Paris, Alcaraz also suffered a surprise defeat to Grigor Dimitrov in the Shanghai Masters round-of-16.
Since winning Wimbledon, Alcaraz has gone six consecutive tournaments without winning a title. “There are days like this, but it’s difficult for me to exit like this in a tournament where I hoped I could reach the final.
It’s a failure, and it hurts. I am disappointed by my level and how I felt on court. I have many things to improve if I want to have decent chances at the ATP Finals. I came to Paris with the clear idea to play the ATP Finals with an option to be back at the No 1 on spot in the rankings.
I think my chances are gone now," Alcaraz told Spanish reporters, via Tennis Majors.
Alcaraz plans to get back on the practice court
This week, Alcaraz was hoping to get some good preparation for the ATP Finals and also reduce Novak Djokovic's lead in their battle for the Year-End No 1 battle.
Since Alcaraz's Paris campaign didn't go as planned, the 20-year-old Spaniard now plans to return to the practice court and do some work there before the start of the ATP Finals. The ATP Finals will be taking place between November 12-19 in Turin.
“I don’t know. I have time before the ATP Finals, a lot of days of practice to be able to reach the level that I want to play. But right now, I’m not in the right time to talk about it. Honestly after the loss, I have to take some time," Alcaraz said.
