World No. 3 Alexander Zverev felt for Sebastian Baez after the Argentine just narrowly missed out on clinching the biggest win of his career. 36th-ranked Baez was on the verge of pulling off a major upset in the French Open second round but Zverev recovered to win 2-6 4-6 6-1 6-2 7-5.
Baez had a match point on Zverev's serve at 5-4 in the fifth set and his game collapsed after failing to convert his first and lone match point. “I told Sebastian this is the worst he will ever feel on the tennis court, this moment,” Zverev said, per Tennishead.
“It was such an incredible match. I know this too well – I lost the US Open final from two sets ahead, The next year I won the Olympic Gold and the ATP Tour Finals."
Zverev. I was planning a holiday
Zverev got off to a slow start and he had to find ways to work his way back into the match after dropping the opening two sets.
Zverev figured out that thinking about a holiday in Monaco would help him relax a bit and that worked as the German created a big comeback and won in five sets. “I just tried to fight. In those moments you’re not going to play great every single match, and you have to find a way to win this match," Zverev added.
“I’m happy with still being in the tournament right now. I was planning my holiday in Monaco, where I’m going to go. That relaxed me a bit, thinking of the beach. There’s not much you can do, you just have to find a way.
You talk about mental strength, talk about Rafa [Nadal] and Novak [Djokovic]. I’ll never be on their level but I’m trying got get closer to them”. Zverev plays Brandon Nakashima in the French Open third round.
