Among the most promising stars of Italian tennis there is certainly Lorenzo Musetti, who from a very young age seemed to be able to burn all the stages of precocity and give Carlos Alcaraz a hard time, but who in reality needed time to mature and who now it would seem to have reached such a level that it can compete even with the strongest.
His is a rather constant growth, which led him to win two ATP tournaments in 2022, in Hamburg and Naples, and to push himself, despite no tournament won but with good placements in the most prestigious tournaments, up to fifteenth position in the ATP ranking in 2023.
In an interview with Gazzetta dello sport, the former world number three and former Roger Federer's former coach Ivan Ljubicic, talked about the young Italian tennis player and the dangerous confrontation with the Swiss Maestro himself.
Ivan Ljubicic said it's dangerous compare Roger Federer and Lorenzo Musetti
The former Croatian tennis player reflected on how dangerous it is to compare a player to Roger Federer, since the comparison creates expectations that are often difficult to meet.
The Croatian coach explained: "It's a dangerous speech. Just look at what happened to Dimitrov, who really was a photocopy of Roger. Heavy comparisons that create expectations that can hurt a player. I don't think Lorenzo looks that much like Federer.
He has great technique, makes you dream, but maybe we want to use his talent to fill the void of beauty that Roger has left. And that can be risky for a guy who's looking for his style and still shaping it." Musetti's next engagement will be the one in which he will be the protagonist at the thirty-second round of the Toronto tournament, when he will face the Japanese Nishioka.
In Canada there will not be Novak Djokovic, who will come back on the court for the Western & Southern Open, just before the US Open.
