Jan-Lennard Struff will not compete at this year's Wimbledon, taking time off the court to recover his body. Five years ago, Struff enjoyed a memorable run at The All England Club, scoring two victories from two sets to love down and setting the third-round clash against Roger Federer.
Struff kicked off his Wimbledon campaign against Leonardo Mayer and dropped the opening two sets 6-3, 7-6. With no room for errors, the German claimed sets three and four in the tie break and broke the rival's resistance in the decider to advance into the second round.
After one challenging encounter, Jan-Lennard had to prepare for an even tougher one! He ousted Ivo Karlovic 6-7, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 13-11 in just under four hours in the second round after fending off one match point. It was an incredible battle with two breaks and over 90 aces!
The German prevailed thanks to a late break in the fifth set and after another two sets to love deficit. World no. 2 and the defending champion Roger Federer was among the player to beat at the most prestigious tennis event that year.
The Swiss met the German in the third round and scored a 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 triumph in an hour and 34 minutes, remaining perfect in this round at Wimbledon. It was Roger's record-breaking 175th ATP win on grass from 200 encounters, passing Jimmy Connors, who stayed on 174.
Also, Federer notched his 335th Major victory and the 94th at Wimbledon, moving closer to a milestone 100th. Like in the opening two encounters, Roger was the dominant figure on the court against Jan-Lennard. He never faced a break point and kept the pressure on the other side.
Struff could not endure it, playing against 14 break chances and losing serve four times to end his run in the third round. The German was powerless against the Swiss' first serve. Jan-Lennard failed to deal with Roger's sharp and aggressive shots, struggling to repeat a great match from the Australian Open when he stayed in touch despite losing in straight sets.
Federer claimed the opening two sets with a single break in each for a massive advantage. He broke the rival two times in the third set to book a place in the last 32 in style. "Great memory playing against Roger Federer on Center Court in round three two years ago, especially after coming from two sets to love down in the opening rounds," Jan-Lennard Struff said.
