Alejandro Davidovich Fokina recalls beating Novak Djokovic in Monte Carlo

World No. 29 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina admitted he didn't think at the start of the Monte Carlo Masters that he would reach the final but beating Novak Djokovic gave him a huge boost of confidence. Davidovich Fokina started his Monte Carlo campaign with a straight-set win over Marcos Giron but no one expected him to take out Djokovic in the second round.

Djokovic was playing just his second tournament of the year and Davidovich Fokina took the advantage of it and beat the Serb 6-3 6-7 (5) 6-1. “From the beginning of the tournament I didn’t think I would reach the final.

I had a very tough draw,” Davidovich Fokina told the ATP Tour website. “In the second round, I had Djokovic. He had not had a lot of rhythm of matches, so I thought I had an opportunity to win that match. After that win, I had a lot of confidence in myself.

“The beginning of the season was tough because in a lot of matches I had a lot of control but that escaped, and I lost. However, after beating Djokovic, everything grew confidence-wise and I started to believe in myself and pushing myself to see where my limits are”.

Davidovich Fokina was stopped by Stefanos Tsitsipas

After beating Djokovic, Davidovich Fokina akso defeated David Goffin, Taylor Fritz and Grigor Dimitrov. After clinching several notable wins, Davidovich Fokina was aiming to upset world No.

5 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. Unfortunately for Davidovich Fokina, he failed to produce another great performance as Tsitsipas won the final 6-3 7-6 (3). Even though Davidovich Fokina failed to win the title, Monte Carlo was still an outstanding tournament for him.

Most importantly, Davidovich Fokina proved to himself that he is capable of playing well against the best players and beating them. On Monday, Davidovich Fokina started his Madrid Masters campaign with a 7-5 6-3 win over Lloyd Harris.
