Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios admitted he was the underdog in his matchup versus Ugo Humbert but he was happy that he managed to escape with a win. Kyrgios, a former world No. 13, returned to action for the first time since early-February and the Australian Open.
On Tuesday evening, Kyrgios started his Wimbledon first round match versus Humbert. The match was suspended midway through the fifth set due to the COVID-19 curfew and the players resumed their match on Wednesday afternoon.
When the match resumed, Kyrgios came up big in key moments as he won 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-1 9-7. "I knew I was a massive underdog. It didn't take too much to get me off my couch in Australia... the atmosphere last night was one of my favourite memories," Kyrgios said after beating Humbert, per George Bellshaw.
"I was in so much pain physically after last night, been a long time since I've played... I'm using this as a change of scenery really. I'm gonna go to the hotel, play some Call of Duty with my girlfriend and come back out again!"
Kyrgios claimed a tight win
Humbert started the match with a 3-1 lead but Kyrgios then claimed back-to-back breaks to win four games in a row take a 5-3 lead.
Kyrgios then served out for the opener in the 10th game. In the second set, no breaks were seen until the 10th game -- when Humbert broke Kyrgios to win the set and level the match at one set apiece. After winning the second set, Humbert broke Kyrgios in the second game of the third set and held on to his serve the rest of the way to take a 2-1 lead.
After losing two sets in a row, Kyrgios broke Humbert twice in the fourth set to force a decider. In the fifth set, Kyrgios broke Humbert in the 15th game and served out for the match in the 16th game.
