Ugo Humbert achieved one of the most important successes of his career at the beginning of 2022. The Frenchman, on the occasion of the ATP Cup, defeated Daniil Medvedev on his debut with a score of (5) 6-7, 7-5, 7- 6 (2). However, after the team tournament devised by the ATP, Humbert's season took a bad turn.
At the Australian Open, the current number 42 in the world rankings lost in the first round to Richard Gasquet in poor form. A few hours after the defeat suffered against the compatriot, the situation worsened and the swab carried out by Humbert gave a positive result.
The Frenchman accused several physical problems due to Covid and only returned to the field on February 2. Humbert, after a negative result, lost badly the two games played at the Open Sud de France and in Rotterdam.
Humbert: "I could not train"
In an exclusive interview with the newspaper L'Équipe, Humbert talked about his current physical condition and the consequences of Covid on his body: "I think I was infected by my physiotherapist, who had direct contact with Fiona Ferro, who then tested positive for Coronavirus.
From that point on, it was very difficult to recover and go back to a normal training session. I had respiratory problems and, again due to Covid, I was unable to train for more than thirty minutes a day. I felt severe pain in my legs, I was always exhausted and could not enjoy tennis." Humbert will take to the field at the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells and Miami over the next few weeks.
The goal of the French tennis player is to recover energy and prepare in the best way for the season on clay. Humbert will have the opportunity to play various tournaments in front of the home crowd and compete at Roland Garros.
The second Grand Slam of the year will be held from 22 May to 5 June. His best world rankings are 25th place in singles on 21 June 2021 and 361st place in doubles on 14 October 2019. In singles he has won three ATP titles and six Challenger titles. He has also won four singles and three doubles titles on the ITF circuit.
