Ugo Humbert has certainly not lived a simple period on and off the tennis courts. In fact, the French player revealed, in an interview with TennisActu, the difficulties he had to face recently. He told: "We had a good week of preparation before Marrakech, but then I tested positive for Covid-19 when I left." The Frenchman then arrived in Monte-Carlo for the third Master 1000 of the season, in which he successfully passed the two qualifying rounds.
However, the athlete won the two matches with clear symptoms of the virus. He said: "On Saturday I was dizzy in the morning. Sunday I still wasn't feeling 100%. But frankly I am very happy with my game. This victory shows that I can also win on clay." These are the considerations expressed by the 24-year-old.
He added: "On clay I don't have too many points of reference, I feel a bit lost on the court. I worry even more than usual. Strangely there are times when I enjoy it and sometimes I can't do it. And I don't understand why. I have to try to work on it.
I'm talking about it with Jeremy (Chardy, who has been away for over a year from the circuit, has in fact become his new coach - ed.)." Then he added: "From Miami I ask him a lot of questions about how to play and he tells me clay is super easy." Humbert also shared a little anecdote about Rafael Nadal: "I trained with him last year.
I hit the best set of my life and took 6-2!" He concluded.
Defeat in the first round
Despite a strong performance, Humbert surrendered in the first round of the main draw in Monte-Carlo. The Frenchman suffered the crazy comeback of Lorenzo Sonego, able to win with the final score of 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.
The Turinese also managed to cancel 4 match points on 4-5 of the decisive set, driven by the great cheering in the stands.
