Australian Open: Casper Ruud surprised by Brooksby: the match point
by LORENZO CIOTTI
Yet another big surprise on the night of the Australian Open 2023. The number two seed of the tournament Casper Ruud was eliminated by a new outsider. Although it's not his best surface, the Norwegian had high expectations for this tournament but was unexpectedly eliminated by the young American talent Jenson Brooksby.
A hard-fought challenge, which lasted almost four hours, saw the very young star-spangled talent win in four sets, responding point by point to the Nordic athlete's blows, however not on his best day. Great opportunity now for Jenson as a real hole opens up in the lower part of the draw.
The calendar up to the quarterfinals is far from impossible and both Brooksby and his rivals can become the surprise of the tournament. Jenson will face compatriot Tommy Paul in the third round, winner, after a long battle and five very intense sets, of the match against the Spanish Davidovich Fokina.
Brooksby is yet another proof of the great growth in American tennis in recent months: not only Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe, recently protagonists of the success (obviously also thanks to the women's team) of the United Cup but also Brooksby and the very young Ben Shelton.
The class of 2002 (born in October) clearly won the second round match, three sets over the Chilean Jarry and a clear 7-6;7-6;7-5. American tennis is clearly growing and Brooksby is yet another example of all this, with stars and stripes fans curious to understand where the athlete from Sacramento can go.
A class of 2000 but with great growth margins. The Round of 16 at the 2021 US Open are the best Grand Slam result of the tennis player who now wants to at least equal it or even try to improve. Meanwhile, after Nadal, Ruud also goes out, the circuit loses some of its favorites.

The other matches
Who respects the predictions is Holger Rune, who in the very complicated match against Maxime Cressy condenses the vast majority of the difficulties during the first set.
Needless to say, he recovers a late break and avoids the jeudecif before settling the practice with a double 6-4. In the women's draw, the cartel challenge is won by Caroline Garcia. The WTA Finals champion cancels eight of the nine break points she makes available to the finalist of the 2021 edition of the Us Open, Leylah Fernandez, she plays a match of extraordinary quality and closes on 7-6 (5) 7-5 after more than two hours of play.
