Hubert Hurkacz is the new champion of the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai, matching also Novak Djokovic's data. The Polish tennis player defeated Andrey Rublev in the final in a difficult match from the first to the last point: only the tie-break of the third and decisive set, this one even more sweaty and painful, decreed the new winner, after four years of tournament.
In a tie-break in which the Russian tennis player, number five in the world, was the first to have the match point. Once this was cancelled, Hurkacz then rose to the level in the decisive points, waiting for his opponent's mistake to go and take the trophy of the Chinese ATP 1000 tournament.
For Hubert it is not the first tournament won of 2023 and, above all, it is not the first tournament won by canceling a match point.
He goes down a category and goes back to February: in Marseille, in the ATP 250, when he defeated Benjamin Bonzi in the final with the result of 6-3, 7-6. The Polish number one, the only player outside the top 10 to have won the Shanghai Masters 1000, is not the only one to have won a title after saving a match point, just as he is not the only one to have won them two.
Hubert Hurkacz matches at Novak Djokovic's super data
Only Novak Djokovic this season, like Hubert Hurkacz, managed to win two titles after saving match points. For the Serbian tennis player, reference is made to the victory of the Adelaide 1 title, won at the beginning of the year, before the Australian Open, against Sebastian Korda.
Same thing that the 24-time Slam champion managed to do in the titanic final of the ATP Masters 1000 in Cincinnati against Carlos Alcaraz. For both, therefore, an ATP 250' title and an ATP Masters 1000 title, demonstrating great mental solidity.
Hurkacz and Djokovic are the only ones who have managed to achieve this feat twice, but there are other names who have managed to do it only once in 2023. Yibing Wu in Dallas. Holger Rune in Munich. Frances Tiafoe in Stuttgart. Chris Eubanks at the Majorca tournament. This is the complete list of men's tennis players who have won a title after canceling a match point.
