In the first-round clash between two past Canadian Open titlists in Montreal on Tuesday, Camila Giorgi got the better of Bianca Andreescu. The Italian, who won the title here in 2019, came through 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 31 minutes against the home favourite.
Andreescu had won the title in 2021. Giorgi saved all five break points she faced while converting three break points on Andreescu’s serve. She also won 60% points on return on the latter’s second serve while winning 61% of her second-serve points.
Giorgi also lost only six points on her first serve behind 29 points that were played on it. The 31-year-old will take on seventh seed Petra Kvitova in the second round.
Canadian Open: Marketa Vondrousova vs Caroline Wozniacki, coming up next
Kvitova’s compatriot, the 2023 Wimbledon winner, Marketa Vondrousova finally made her return to the Tour since her Wimbledon glory.
The ninth seed prevailed 6-4, 6-2 over Egypt’s Mayar Sherif in 78 minutes. Vondrousova’s second round will be an intriguing clash against Caroline Wozniacki, who was ranked as high as no. 1 in her career prior to her retirement a couple of years back.
The Dane who’d announced that she would be making a comeback to professional tennis this year won her first-round match against Kimberly Birrell. The 33-year-old who received a main draw wildcard won 6-2, 6-2 against the Australian qualifier.
Another Czech, Marie Bouzkova, meanwhile, posted an upset in her second-round match. Bouzkova ousted fifth seed Caroline Garcia 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in two hours and 14 minutes in what was the latter’s opening-round match in the Canadian city.
Lastly, Victoria Azarenka gave a walkover to Sloane Stephens before their second-round match-up. The 16th seed posted on X, “Dear fans, I am sorry to say, but I have unfortunate news that during my warm up for tonight’s match, I re-injured a lingering injury that I thought was resolved and need to withdraw from the match.
Wishing the event all the best success and good luck to Sloane for the rest of the tournament. I love Montreal and I look forward to coming back!” Now, looking to make it to the fourth round of the Canadian Open, Stephens awaits the winner between Jennifer Brady and Elena Rybakina.
