Caroline Garcia made it through to the quarter-finals of the Cleveland Open on Tuesday. The Frenchwoman, who’s the top seed in the Ohian event this week, beat Peyton Stearns 7-6(4), 6-3 in an hour and 37 minutes in their second-round clash.
Garcia hit 10 aces and had seven double faults. She still finished the match by winning 83% of her first-serve points to her opponent’s 69%. She also won 50% of her second-serve points and 56% points on return on the American’s second serve.
The 29-year-old saved two of the four break points she faced while converting four of 11 break points on Stearns’ serve. This is the first time since June that Garcia’s reached the quarter-finals of a WTA tournament.
The French player made it to the Bett1 Open quarter-finals in Berlin in the grass season, before Wimbledon. That time, she’d lost to eventual champion Petra Kvitova. Now, in the US, she will play Lin Zhu. Zhu defeated Austrian Julia Grabher 6-4, 6-1 in their round-of-16 match.
Cleveland Open: Seeds' results, a mixed-bag
On Wednesday, Tatjana Maria made it to the quarter-finals after receiving a walkover from fifth Anhelina Kalinina before their second-round face-off. Maria had won her first-round match on Tuesday against Varvara Gracheva 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, one other seed also came through to the quarters. Fourth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova needed an hour and 37 minutes to beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich, 7-6(2), 6-3. Alexandrova will play Xinyu Wang next. The qualifier upset 11th seed Jasmine Paolini 6-4, 6-3 in their second-round match on Tuesday.
Sara Sorribes Tormo upset third seed Veronika Kudermetova in their second-round match. The Spaniard won 6-4, 6-1 in an hour and 43 minutes. For a place in the semi-finals, Sorribes Tormo will play either Sloane Stephens or Mirra Andreeva.
The latter match had to be postponed for Thursday with the ninth-seeded Stephens leading 6-3, 3-0. Lastly, Leylah Fernandez also claimed a quarter-final spot at the Cleveland Open. The Canadian who played Clara Tauson advanced after the latter retired midway in their match.
Fernandez had won the opening set 6-0 before the Dane’s retirement. The former US Open finalist’s next rival will be Tatjana Maria.
