In California, Tiger Woods was taken ill with flu-like symptoms. The 15-time Major champion withdrew from the PGA Tour's Genesis Invitational after just six holes into the second round. Following discussions with the tournament officials, he was transported to the Club House via a golf cart and treated with intravenous fluids.

Tiger Woods, statements

"He had a bit of a fever before the game, then his condition improved during warm-up. He started walking, playing, but experienced dizziness. He was dehydrated and did not suffer any new injuries, his back is fine," reassured Rob McNamara, Woods' associate and vice president of Tgr Ventures.

Woods is the son of Kultida Woods, a native of Thailand, and Earl Woods, a United States Army Lieutenant Colonel. Woods has two half-brothers and a half-sister from Earl Woods' 18-year marriage to Barbara Woods Gary. He was born in Cypress, California, and grew up a bit further north along the West Coast of the United States in the Los Angeles area.

His father gave him the nickname "Tiger" at birth in honor of his friend Vuong Dang Phong, who had fought with him in the Vietnam War. Woods attended Western High School in Anaheim and studied economics at Stanford University for two years before turning professional.

In 1996, he co-founded the Tiger Woods Foundation with his father, which focuses on the education and support of children and youth in the United States. From October 2004 to August 2010, Tiger Woods was married to former Swedish model Elin Nordegren.

The couple has a daughter (born in 2007) and a son (born in 2009). Since their divorce on August 23, 2010, custody of the children has been shared between both parents. In mid-March 2013, Woods announced on his Facebook account that he was in a relationship with alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn.

On May 3, 2015, Vonn announced on her Facebook page that she and Woods had split up. Woods has ancestors of African American, Native American, Chinese, Thai, and Dutch descent. His popularity is credited with increasing interest in golf among non-white Americans as well. Tiger Woods is a practicing Buddhist.
