Anna Kalinskaya caused the sole upset on Tuesday at the Serbia Ladies Open. The Russian defeated sixth seed Kristina Mladenovic 6-0, 7-6(6) in an hour and 42 minutes in the first round. Kalinskaya finished with 78 points to Mladenovic’s 62 points for the match.
In the second round, the world no. 89 will play Hungarian qualifier, Reka-Luca Jani. Jani defeated Tereza Martincova in the opening round, 6-2, 0-6, 7-5 in two hours and three minutes. Meanwhile, fifth-seeded Nadia Podoroska ousted France’s Oceane Dodin 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 22 minutes in the second round.
The Argentine saved all seven break points she faced while converting three of the seven break points on Dodin’s serve. She also won around 73% of her first-serve points while Dodin could manage to win only about 53% points off her first serves.
In the quarter-final, Podoroska will now play either Croatian Ana Konjuh or second seed Yulia Putintseva. In her opening-round match on Tuesday, Konjuh – who qualified into the main draw – defeated Alison van Uytvanck 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 in an hour and 48 minutes.
Serbia Ladies Open: Rebecca Peterson reaches 2R
Seventh seed Rebecca Peterson also moved into the second round. The Swede rallied from a set down to defeat home favourite Nina Stojanovic 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 in an hour and 55 minutes.
In the round-of-16, Peterson will take on Ajla Tomljanovic. Paula Badosa, the Spanish fourth seed also reached the quarter-finals. Badosa took out Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-0, 6-4 in the second round in an hour and 21 minutes. For a place in the semi-finals, Badosa will play the winner between Peterson and Tomljanovic.
Aliaksandra Sasnovich will play Cristina Bucsa for a spot in the last-eight. The Belarusian defeated Xiyu Wang 6-7(6), 6-0, 6-2 in the first round. Lastly, at the top of the Serbia Ladies Open draw, Viktoriya Tomova will take on Leylah Fernandez for a quarter-final berth.
In her opening-round encounter against Serbian wildcard Lola Radivojevic, the Slovakian lucky loser posted a 6-2, 6-3 win in 78 minutes.
