Winners Open: Andrea Petkovic survives Jaqueline Cristian test; seeds stumble

Upsets continued at the Winners Open on Wednesday. Ana Bogdan seeded third and Kaja Juvan, seeded sixth both lost their pre-quarter-final matches. Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic upset Bogdan, the highest-ranked Romanian in the draw, 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 23 minutes.

Krunic won 77% points off her first serve to Bogdan’s 55%. She lost her serve only once – faced just the one break point as well – and made good of four of the five break-point chances she had on Bogdan’s serve.

Krunic finished the match with 57 points to her opponent’s 44. In the quarter-final, Krunic will play Anna Karolina Schmiedlova who caused the other upset of the day. The Slovakian defeated Juvan 7-6(7), 6-0 in an hour and 35 minutes in their second-round match.

As with Krunic, Schmiedlova, too, faced and was broken once across the match. In turn, Schmiedlova converted four of the eight break points she had on the Slovenian’s serve. Schmiedlova won 71% points off her first serve to Juvan’s 47% and 62% of her second-serve points to her opponent’s 51%.

The world no. 99 also finished with 70 points to Juvan’s 50.

Winners Open: Andrea Petkovic marches on

Second seed Andrea Petkovic, meanwhile, avoided the saga of upsets in her round-of-16 encounter against Romanian Jaqueline Cristian.

Petkovic won 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 34 minutes. The German, however, faced a stern test in the opening set as she faced five set points. She went on to stave them all before clinching the set and eventually the second, to prevail in straight sets.

Both players won 66% points off their first serve. The difference between the two, however, came down to Petkovic winning relatively more points off her second serves as compared to Cristian – 48% to the latter’s 42%.

Likewise, Petkovic saved seven of the nine break points she faced while converting four of the six break points she had on Cristian’s serve. In the quarter-finals of the Winners Open, Petkovic will play Seone Mendez.

The Australian qualifier will make her debut in the quarters of a WTA tournament. Earlier, Mendez’s second-round opponent, Lesia Tsurenko withdrew from their match with an injury. Mendez was leading 4-3 in the first set at the time of the Ukrainian’s retirement.
