Maria Sakkari advanced to the quarter-finals of the Parma Ladies Open. The Greek who’s the highest seed this week in the Italian event beat Arantxa Rus in their second-round match. Sakkari needed two hours and 36 minutes to notch a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Sakkari saved five of the six break points she faced and converted three break points on the Dutchwoman’s serve. The only time Sakkari conceded her serve was in the first set.
Sakkari will play Belgium’s Maryna Zanevska for a chance to reach the semi-finals.
Zanevska won against Dalma Galfi 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 17 minutes.
Parma Ladies Open: Sloane Stephens bucks the trend
Third seed Irina-Camelia Begu also clinched a spot in the quarters. The Romanian beat Italian wildcard Matilde Paoletti, 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 42 minutes.
She will next play sixth seed Ana Bogdan.
The Hungarian got past Slovakian qualifier Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in their second-round match after two hours and 25 minutes of play.
Meanwhile, Jasmine Paolini advanced to the quarter-finals after coming through a second-round derby against fellow Italian, Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
Paolini came from down a set to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 after two hours and 20 minutes of play.
Paolini will play Danka Kovinic next. The Montenegrin upset fourth-seeded Sloane Stephens 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 in their round-of-16 clash.
Lastly, Mayar Sherif and Lauren Davis will play each other in the quarters of the Parma Ladies Open.
Sherif defeated Swiss Simona Waltert, 6-3, 7-6(1) in the second round while Davis got past Sara Sorribes Tormo, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
