Ladies Open Lausanne: Tamara Zidansek and Clara Burel to bid for maiden trophy

Tamara Zidansek and Clara Burel will take on each other in the Ladies Open Lausanne final on Sunday. The Slovenian and Frenchwoman came through their semi-finals against Maryna Zanevska and Caroline Garcia respectively, on Saturday.

In the first semi-final, Burel upset compatriot Garcia, the fifth seed, in two hours and 25 minutes. The 20-year-old came from a set down to oust the 76th ranked Garcia 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. In the first set, Garcia broke Burel thrice and saved three of the five break points she faced to go up in the match.

The second and third sets saw Burel execute a better-controlled plan against her higher-ranked opponent. In the second set, she saved two of the three break points she faced and broke Garcia thrice to level the match. In the deciding set, both players exchanged a break of serve before Burel once again raced ahead.

The 125th-ranked Burel went on to break Garcia for a total of three times to take the set and the match.

In the second semi-final, the top-seeded Zidansek beat Zanevska 7-5, 6-3 in an hour and 33 minutes.

Both players exchanged two service breaks each in the first set. In the 12th game of the first set, Zidansek had three set points on Zanevska’s serve and she didn’t waste any of them to pocket the set and the lead after 53 minutes of play.

The second set was relatively easier for the French Open semi-finalist as she built a double-break lead to clinch the win. Zidansek won 74 points to Zanevska's 58. This is Tamara Zidansek’s third career final and the second this season.

On both previous occasions, in the finals of the 2019 Nuremberg Cup and 2020 Copa Colsanitas, Zidansek lost Yulia Putintseva and Maria Camila Osorio Serrano respectively. On the other hand, the Ladies Open Lausanne is the first WTA final for Clara Burel. Their clash in the final in the Swiss city will be the first career meeting between the two players.
