Cori Gauff reveals she was ready to administer CPR on a fan who felt unwell during her Washington match. On Friday night, Gauff ousted Belinda Bencic 6-1 6-2 in the Washington first round. The match was briefly interrupted when a fan fell ill in the stands.
"At first, I was just making sure that it wasn’t something cardiac because I just took a CPR class so I was ready if they needed me to jump any moment! I have my certification. So, I did ask the ref if it was cardiac but she said it wasn’t cardiac and that’s when I realized the person will probably be okay.
But yeah, everybody in the stadium should take the class. It’s only 90 minutes so you go. When I came back from Wimbledon, I booked it on the flight and it took me 90 minutes, so everybody in here you should really take the class.
it’s really informative," Gauff said.
Gauff easily handled Bencic
Gauff started the match with a 2-0 lead but Bencic got the break back in the third game. From that moment, Gauff won the next six games to open a 6-1 2-0 lead.
Down by a set and a break, Bencic managed to briefly get back into the match as she won two consecutive games to tie the second set to two games apiece. Blowing an early second-set break didn't impact Gauff really as the American claimed back-to-back breaks in the fifth and seventh games to win four games in a row and complete a two-set win over Bencic.
"I'm really happy with how I played today. Belinda is not an easy player to play. I played all types of tennis. I was the aggressor in some moments. Some moments I was the defender. This definitely is probably one of the top matches that I have played," Gauff said after beating Bencic.
