Auger-Aliassime converted his third break point of the match in the fifth game, before routinely serving out for the opener in the 10th game. The Canadian started the second set with a break and also broke the Australian in games five and seven to take a comfortable two-set lead.
The two players were tied at two games apiece after the opening four games of the third set, before Auger-Aliassime claimed back-to-back breaks to wrap up a straight-set win. "I served well. I didn't face a break point, that was key," Auger-Aliassime said after the match, as quoted on the ATP website.
"I was able to adapt well, change my position, mix things up, just create opportunities. It was a very complete match. It was good to get through in three sets in the hot weather... I can be happy with my performance."
Auger-Aliassime plays next against Denis Shapovalov
Auger-Aliassime, seeded at No.
20, is set to clash next against his close friend and fellow compatriot Shapovalov. Shapovalov, seeded at No. 11, handed a 6-1 6-3 6-2 defeat to Australian Bernard Tomic to progress into the third round at the Australian Open.
Shapovalov started the match with back-to-back breaks and he also broke Tomic in the seventh game to easily win the opener. Tomic played much better in the second set but he failed to capitalize on his chances as Shapovalov saved four break points in the first game and two more in the third game.
The Canadian broke the Australian in the fourth game and then held on to his serve to take a two-set lead. Shapovalov then earned two breaks in the third set to wrap up a straight-set win.
