Borna Gojo reacts to sealing win that was key in beating Novak Djokovic-led Serbia

Croatian Borna Gojo admitted he got down on himself atter blowing a lead in the first set against Dusan Lajovic but he was glad his team was there to lift his spirits. Gojo, ranked at No. 279 in the world, clinched his third upset win at the Davis Cup Finals as he stunned former world No.

23 Lajovic 4-6 6-3 6-2 in the opening rubber of the Croatia and Serbia semifinal tie. Gojo was up 4-1 in the first set and had three consecutive game points but then his game shut down for the rest of the set as Lajovic claimed back-to-back breaks to steal the opener.

After losing the first set, Gojo dominated the rest of the match as he claimed two breaks in each of the following two sets to claim a comeback win. Novak Djokovic beat Marin Cilic in the following rubber but year-end No.

1 doubles duo Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic beat Djokovic and Filip Krajnovic in the decisive rubber to send Croatia into the final. “In the first set I was up 4-2 40-0, I was in control, I slipped in that game there.

I got down on myself a little bit, but then the captain and the teams and the fans picked me back up. Obviously Davis Cup is a special competition where the pressure is bigger on everyone and I managed to play some of my best tennis here at this tournament.

I’m very happy that I managed to get those big wins, ranking wise, but for me it’s more important that I managed to get the point for the team”.

Gojo continues to impress

Gojo drew attention to himself when he stunned Alexei Popyrin on the opening day of the Davis Cup Finals.

Gojo delivered another big performance in the quarterfinal as he surprised Italy's Lorenzo Sonego in Turin, with having the whole arena against him. Gojo, who has never been ranked inside the top-200, has a perfect 3-0 record at this year's Davis Cup Finals.

"I know all of you guys were always looking at the rankings and thinking, okay, we don't have much chance. To be honest, I always expected myself to win no matter who I play against. It was the case against Australia, Italy and today," Gojo said, per Lorenzo Ercoli.
