Hugo Gaston reacts to beating Carlos Alcaraz in stunning fashion

World No. 103 Hugo Gaston noticed that Carlos Alcaraz was starting to lose his concentration after taking a 5-0 second-set lead and he decided to make a strong push for the set. Gaston, 21, stunned world No. 34 Alcaraz 6-4 7-5 in the Paris Masters round-of-16.

Alcaraz was twice up by a break in the first break but Gaston both times recovered, before earning his third break of the set in the ninth game to steal the opener. After losing the last four games of the first set, Alcaraz won the first five games of the second set.

However, Gaston refused to quit as he earned three consecutive breaks and won seven games in a row to win the set and book a straight-set win. “I was drifting off at that point, and he started to have a letdown, as well,” Gaston said, per the ATP website.

“He made a lot of mistakes, because I managed to have fast balls, slow balls, to have high balls. He started to lose his groove, and I stayed focused. This is why I managed to overturn the match in my favour."

Gaston gave credit to the crowd for his win

“[The atmosphere] was incredible.

Honestly, I have been playing tennis for this. It was actually incredible. It was really wonderful to live this match with them. I actually won because they supported me from beginning to the end even when I had a letdown during the first or the second set, they were always cheering me.

It's incredible to have such a great public," Gaston added. "Honestly, I owe this victory to you, the crowd. I can't thank you enough. My jersey for the third set were ready. And I heared the word 'remontada' And I thought : 'why not'" Gaston, who made the French Open round-of-16 last year, is now again enjoying one of his best runs in Paris.
