Dominic Thiem 'happy' after crushing Dominik Koepfer at Australian Open

Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem was extremely happy after his second round win at the Australian Open against German Dominik Koepfer. Thiem, seeded at No. 3, saw off world No. 70 Koepfer in straight sets as he won 6-4 6-0 6-2 to progress into the third round at the Australian Open.

Thiem, who finished runner-up to world Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final last year, is looking great so far at Melbourne Park. “I feel great, to be honest. I love this court, Margaret Court Arena,” Thiem said in his on-court interview, per the ATP website.

“Today was a great match, I think my best so far in Australia. A lot of good stuff to build on”.

Thiem dominated Koepfer after claiming his first break

Thiem saved two break points in the sixth game, before he converted his fourth break point in the following game to take a 4-3 lead.

Thiem then routinely served out for the opener in the 10th game. In the second set, Thiem absolutely crushed Koepfer as he earned three breaks and lost no service games to bagel the German. The Austrian then started the third set with back-to-back breaks and a 4-0 lead, before serving out for the match in the eighth game.

"After that I played more freely," Thiem said, per the Australian Open website. "Especially after the first set, kind of everything started to work. I found a super good timing. I think it got some degrees cooler, which was little bit more comfortable to play.

"But in general I'm happy because I beat a very good opponent in three sets." Thiem played at the ATP Cup last week, where he lost to Italian Matteo Berrettini before France's Benoit Paire retired him their clash. “Today was a good match, I think the best so far in Australia and a lot of good stuff to build on,”Thiem noted. Thiem plays next against either Nick Kyrgios or Ugo Humbert.
