Tennis - German Yannick Hanfmann, who received a wild card into this week's Munich event, says his goal this year is to break into the Top 100 in the world rankings. Hanfmann began his campaign in Munich with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis on Monday and will meet fellow German and top seed Alexander Zverev in the second round.
Speaking to Spox.com, Hanfmann says, "I may be a bit further ahead than last year, where the tournament was the starting signal for a good summer, but I hope that I can do something similar this year, even though the season so far may not have been so successful.
The goal is to get into the top 100 right now, I'm just trying to work on my stuff, especially on my serve to get better in the end, but it will not be easy, as some points could go out in the summer I've played a lot of tournaments this season that I did not play last year and did not get the hoped-for results with many first-round defeats that were gnawing at me as well, with every match I win now I hope better again to become and regain my rhythm." Hanfmann is currently ranked No.
118 in the world and has struggled for the most part of the season - winning just 5 matches in 12 tournaments this season, which included an eight-match losing streak. Speaking of his match-up against the World No. 3 Zverev, Hanfmann says this will be his first match against a Top 10 player, "I have never played against such a player.
It will definitely be a special match and a great match, as a preparation we will watch a few matches from him and try to analyze his game and I will definitely have to play my best tennis to get him in trouble there are a few things you can see Sascha is relatively far behind the baseline and maybe I will sprinkle a stop or two."
