German qualifier Daniel Altmaier was thrilled after creating a huge upset at the end French Open and making his maiden round-of-16 of a Grand Slam. Altmaier, ranked at No. 186 in the world, stunned No. 7 seed Matteo Berrettini in straight sets 6-2 7-6 (5) 6-4 to continue his fairytale French Open run.
Altmaier has made the French Open round-of-16 in a stunning fashion, having previously beaten Feliciano Lopez and Jan-Lennard Struff also in straight sets. "It’s my first time on this court and playing in Paris, I’m delighted to be in the fourth round,” Altmaier said after beating Berrettini, per the ATP website.
“My coach and I have been working so hard to be here, and while I’ve struggled with a few injuries, I am super-pleased it’s at Roland Garros. Before qualifying, I was struggling with an injury, so I wasn’t sure I was going to play.
I hope the crowd and the TV audience enjoyed watching, as I want to entertain”.
Berrettini admitted he couldn't find his way against Altmaier
Altmaier started the match with a 3-0 and then claimed his second break of the set in the eighth game to win the first set.
Berrettini started the second set with a break in the opening game but then failed to serve out for the set in the 10th game. The Italian paid the price for failing to serve out for the set as Altmaier won the tie-break to take a two-set lead.
Altmaier then claimed the lone break of the third set in the fifth game and that was the end for Berrettini. "I was struggling to find the right attitude, the right energy. I was nervous. When I tried to calm down, I was too calm.
I was struggling every single aspect of the game. It was a really bad day. I actually almost won a set playing like this, feeling like this," Berrettini admitted after the match, per Ravi Ubha. Meanwhile, Roberto Bautista Agut lost in four sets to Pablo Carreno Busta but he didn't appear to be too sad.
"I feel again the feeling of having a family, so it's very nice, it's an amazing feeling and, well, I just, now I need some time at home to enjoy them and to feel a little bit what it is to be a father because I could stay only at home for three days after his birth," Bautista Agut said after losing to Carreno Busta, per Ravi Ubha.
