Rising Finnish star Emil Ruusuvuori acknowledged that it wasn't easy competing against 17-year-old Carlos Alcaraz in the Miami Masters first round. Ruusuvuori, ranked at No. 83 in the world, overcame fellow rising star Alcaraz in three sets 6-4 2-6 7-5 to advance to the second round in Miami.
Ruusuvuori was down by a break in the third set but he responded with two breaks to steal the set and beat Alcaraz. "It was decided by very few points, it was a very small difference [between us] today,” Ruusuvuori said, per the ATP website.
“In the end, he had a chance in the third, we both had our chances. But I was able to come back and somehow get the win. But it was a very difficult match. He was playing very well, and I’m just happy to get through”.
Ruusuvuori praises Alcaraz
"He’s very young and very talented. A very good player [that] I’m sure we’re going to hear about a lot,” Ruusuvuori said. “So much power already at that age, he can do some serious damage.
But somehow today I got the win”. At just the age of 17, Alcaraz claimed his maiden Grand Slam win as he beat Botic Van de Zandschulp in the Australian Open first round last month. "I'm very happy to win today in my first Grand Slam," Alcaraz said at the time.
"I tried to enjoy, to play my game. I think I did it. I enjoyed [the match]. I got the experience. I'm excited to play my second round." "I played a very good first set. I think he missed a lot of balls. I tried to be focussed all the time," Alcaraz added of his performance at Melbourne Park.
"The second set was very, very tough. He played a really good game in the second set. I tried to be relaxed in the tough moments."
